Job Title:  Reading Teacher                                                                

Reports To:  Principal

 

FLSA Status:  Exempt

 

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to perform professional instructional work for reading classes and supplementing the reading instruction provided in regular classes by working with individual students or small groups of students who have been identified as needing specific reading instruction.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide a balanced literacy program for individual students and small groups of students, who demonstrate a need for intervention
  • Work as the Reading Specialist to coordinate reading tests at appropriate grade levels and assist teachers in analyzing the test results.
  • Provide intervention programs for students who have not achieved reading competency commensurate with their potential according to district and site priorities.
  • Refer students who need special interventions to professional personnel for specialized services, working closely with special education personnel.
  • Assist the Principal and teachers in planning the reading program for the school.
  • Develop a system of record keeping, coordinated with the Reading/Language Arts competency assessment to facilitate long and short term evaluation of pupil progress.
  • Inform parents and teachers of the reading program and the progress of pupils in that program, and ways in which parents may assist.
  • Establish and maintain two-way communication with parents, students, and other staff members in an honest, positive, and constructive manner.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes during the scheduled workday when required or requested to do so.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established school curriculum goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons, and carefully monitors student progress toward learning goals.
  • Create an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interest, and abilities of students; translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of each student.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Attend building and charter meetings to promote communication and mutual decision making among the staff and schools.
  • Serve on building committees that develop curriculum and enhance instruction.
  • Participate in professional improvement activities; take advantage of courses, readings, in-service training, and conferences in his/her area of specialization and competency.
  • Fulfill the requirements of punctuality, reliability, and responsibility with regard to school level and school district policies, procedures, and regulations.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in reading.
  • Hold a Missouri teaching certificate
  • Experience in a ‘reading program’ used for remediation of reading

 

Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in Reading
  • Special Reading K-12 Certificate

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices for effective teaching techniques and strategies in area of reading
  • Use of available instructional media
  • Use of modern techniques for classroom assessment
  • Use of effective interpersonal communications.
  • Skill in the use of a microcomputer and related software.
  • Provide consistent, effective interventions for students in the reading program
  • Ability to perform the following work activities with or without reasonable accommodations:

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, administrators, staff, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Directors policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
